Update to the “Death Tax” repeal.
June 30th, 2011
Today, Governor Kasich signed the Ohio State Budget for Fiscal year’s 2011 & 2012. In this budget was a bill to repeal Ohio’s Estate Tax. Although the Governor vetoed several items from the budget, the Repeal Bill was left intact and untouched. As of January 1st, 2013, Ohio will no longer have this dreaded tax burden placed upon families and businesses.
I would like to personally thank Pete Patterson, (Deerfield Township Trustee) and Jeff Monroe, (Lebanon City Council). The three of us traveled to the State House in Columbus and testified for the repeal of the Estate Tax. As far as I know, we were the only people from Warren County to testify.

I recently traveled to our State House in Columbus to testify in support of Senate Bill 90 before the Senate Ways & Means Committee. This bill would repeal the Estate Tax if passed. Below is the text of my testimony.
April 7th, 2011
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Senate Ways & Means & Economic Development Committee,
There is no doubt as to the insidious nature of the Estate Tax and the detrimental effects that it has on the business owners, farmers, and families, across our great state of Ohio. The Estate Tax, known to most as the death tax, is an unnatural burden that is enabled by the state and affects our economy in a negative manner.
The Estate tax not only impedes Ohio’s economic recovery, but also the states future as a leader across the nation.
This tax drives Ohio businesses out of state creating higher unemployment. It discourages capital formation and entrepreneurship and fosters continued dominance of large enterprises over small family owned companies and farms. This tax also imposes unacceptably high tax planning costs on small businesses and farms. Why would anyone want to start a small business here in Ohio, knowing with this tax burden upon them, there will be little to nothing left to pass on to a family member or a trusted person within the business?
This tax has been detrimental to Ohio’s agricultural community. Family farms have been sold by the hundreds, usually to a developer just to pay the Estate Tax, instead of being passed on to son’s and daughters that wish to continue the operation.
Without these farms and businesses employing those who wish to remain there, the employee’s must now search for a job in a jobless market instead of using their skills and abilities where they could continue working, cutting down on the time and expense of training them for another job.
The repeal of the Estate Tax will help Ohio move forward to a prosperous tomorrow. The effects of the repeal would be felt almost immediately in a positive manner for our state.
The repeal would promote:
(1) Economic growth
(2) Increased investment in our state
(3) Enhance personal productivity and entrepreneurship.
The repeal would not only keep jobs in Ohio, but will also create jobs, putting people back to work all of which means increased tax revenue, less cost to the taxpayers in retraining laid off workers, and a more vibrant state in which to live and be proud of.
Thank you for giving me a moment of your time today and may God grant us wisdom and foresight as we take this historical step to improve upon our State and the residents therein.

Harlan Township Churches
This is an open invitation to all clergy, regardless of denomination, to attend an informative meeting discussing food donations, clothing drives, food pantries, and Christian community outreach.
For the past 6 months, I have felt led to reach out to our local churches and discuss different ways to help those in need. While helping those in need this will also make it possible for our churches to minister to our community members and possibly start a revival of Christianity and an influx of church membership.
I am sure that each of your churches already does mission work. I am asking that we try to do more for our friends and neighbors who are in need or have gone thru a tragedy. All ideas, opinions, and concerns on this matter are welcome for discussion.
This will open a door for each of you to explain how your church operates food drives and community outreach or to maybe even start these programs, and will hopefully show various and more efficient ways of doing this while dealing with our unreliable economy.
This is not a government run meeting and as such, your church will be free to discuss ideas and opportunities with no restrictions and regulations that would otherwise hamper us in our commitment to Christ.
I have asked for a representative from “God’s Food Pantry” in Blanchester, to lead us in this meeting. It is my hope that each pastor or a delegate from your church will be able to attend.
There are at least 13 churches in Harlan Township. It is not my intent to absent any church from this meeting. If you know members from other churches in our Township that may not be listed on the second page of this letter, please feel free to invite them.
